Wenli Bi, Ph.DThe Nationwide Science Foundation has awarded a Important Study Instrumentation grant of $419,614 to Wenli Bi, Ph.D., assistant professor in the College of Alabama at Birmingham the College of Arts and Sciences Department of Physics.

The grant, led by Bi, is titled “MRI: Acquisition of a Quantum Design and style Physical Attributes Measurement Method for Resources Analysis and Training.”

The MRI grant supports the acquisition of a Actual physical Houses Measurement Technique from Quantum Design and style, which is a point out-of-the-art, really automatic and multifunctional program capable of measuring a multitude of material homes at cryogenic temperature, significant magnetic subject and large tension.

“The PPMS will enormously broaden the resources investigate capability at UAB Physics by right benefiting 7 investigate teams in our office,” Bi said. “It will empower integration of all 3 severe sample environments: superior stress up to 1 million ambiance, small temperature down to 1.9 K and high magnetic industry up to 9 Tesla for supplies exploration.”

Bi thinks the grant will open new avenues for intra- and interdepartmental collaborations with the acquisition of PPMS. Moreover, she hopes it will foster schooling of diverse graduate and undergraduate learners, and teach higher school college students and STEM teachers by study, education and learning and outreach functions. It will also enable build new palms-on modules for lab programs at UAB to display simple physics ideas.

The grant will produce and use displays on highly developed characterization of elements attributes and apps for outreach at McWane Science Centre to boost science literacy in the normal community and inspire K-12 learners to pursue STEM areas.

“The addition of this new study ability will foster new collaborations with other numerous physics and components research teams in Central Alabama,” Bi mentioned.

UAB college Yogesh Vohra, Ph.D., professor college scholar and affiliate dean in the Office of Physics Mary Ellen Zvanut, Ph.D., professor and graduate method director Sergey Mirov, Ph.D., university professor and Renato Camata, Ph.D., affiliate professor and undergraduate method director are the co-principal investigators of this project.
